Pet Dental for Preventative Care

When you think of pet wellness, do you ever stop to think about your pet’s teeth? Taking a little bit of time each day to help your pet’s dental health can prevent many more health problems than just tooth loss. Our veterinarians at Lakeville Animal Hospital would like to provide pet owners in Lakeville and the Middleborough area with a few pet dental care tips.

Dry Food Does Not Really Clean Your Pet’s Teeth

It’s a common misconception that dry food or crunchy treats are all your pets need to have clean teeth. Dry food, although good for pet nutrition, only scrapes away a little plaque, it cannot get everywhere on your pet’s teeth.

Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth

The best preventative care you can provide for your pet’s teeth is to brush them. You can use a very soft human toothbrush or a toothbrush made for pets. Only use toothpaste made for pets, because human toothpaste will make your pets sick. It also does not taste good to pets. Use the same motions you would for brushing a child’s teeth. Your pet may only let you brush a couple of teeth per day. That’s better than nothing. Ask your veterinarian for a few brushing tips.

Pet Dental Toys and Treats

There are some commercially available toys and treats that help to clean your pet’s teeth and massage the gums. Some are better than others. Your veterinarian can provide recommendations for your pet’s specific needs.

Veterinary Dental Cleanings

Just like you need to get a professional cleaning from your dentist, your pet should get a cleaning from a veterinarian once per year. If your pet shows signs of periodontal disease or other dental issues, you may need to have your pet’s teeth checked more often.

Signs That Your Vet Needs to See Your Pet’s Mouth

Pets need to see a vet when they start showing signs of periodontal disease or a toothache. These signs include dropping food constantly while eating, tilting the head while eating, red gums, lost or broken teeth, blood coming from the mouth, weight loss even with a good appetite, really bad breath, and swelling in the mouth.

  • "I'm so pleased with the experience I had at lakeville animal hospital. I am traveling with my dog from northern Maine to visit family and my dog had been sick for 3 days. She couldn't keep any food or water down. Long story short I called lakeville animal hospital and they were able to squeeze Aspen in later on in the day. Turns out the reason Aspen had been sick was that she had atleast one blockage in her intestines. They immediately sent us to a 24 hour emergency vet in Swansea for a surgery. Aspen is now out of surgery with 2 incisions in her intestines and 1 in her stomach. Being a long way from home with a sick puppy is not fun and is quite stressful. But I'm thankful the crew at lakeville animal hospital was able to see her so soon, take X-rays, give her a diagnosis, and make a recommendation for a 24 hour surgery facility."
